Cameron Highlands Attractions - Strawberry Farms

Most visitors to Cameron Highlands are probably surprised to find a number of Strawberry farms thriving in the area. Not normally associated with South East Asia's tropical climate, strawberries have been successfully grown in the highlands for many years. Highlands strawberries tend to be slightly smaller than those grown in Europe, probably due to a lack of long sunshine hours to promote growth, although they can be just as sweet and delicious.

Initially the crop was grown in the ground in the traditional way, today many are grown hydroponically, a method of growing without soil on raised trays fed by water containing the essential nutrients for healthy growth.

Although a number of farms produce the crop, Raju Hill Strawberry Farm and EQ Strawberry Park are among the popular strawberry parks in Cameron Highlands. Both are located in Kea Farm area and close to each other. However, Mountain Strawberry Farm is a new place that has just opened in May 2006. It is located high up in Gunung Brinchang, on your way to Sungai Palas Boh Plantation. Besides picking your own strawberries here, you can pet their rabbits, turkeys, ducks, chicken, goats, cats, and spiders and there are lots of colourful birds too.

A visit to the strawberry park will entail visitors not only to the opportunity to see how strawberries are cultivated but also offer opportunity to purchase freshly picked strawberries with thick delicious fresh cream at affordable prices. Most strawberries are sold to visitors as fresh fruit or jam, with the rest exported down to the lowlands. Strawberries grown here are now readily available at supermarkets around the country, throughout most of the year. This can be attributed greatly to the pioneering efforts at Cameron Highlands. Belief me, your visit to Strawberry Park will be one of the most wonderful experience in your life.

Eco-Canal tour : Lake Chini

For many who had been to Chini in the old days, the most lasting impression after the visit is the boat ride on the canal linking Chini with Pahang River.

In this ever changing world, most situations take on new directions. The fact that I have devoted one page for this canal reveals images of those early trips are fond memories. Ambience while on the canal as compared to what we knew is a day and night situation. Overall depth is undetectable but definitely appears deeper.

Lake Chini (Tasik Chini)

One of the best tourist attractions in Malaysia is Tasik Chini.

Lake Chini or Tasik Chini, about 100 kilometers from Kuantan, with an area 12,565 acres of lush tropical wilderness, is Malaysia's second largest natural lake. Situated on the right bank of the Pahang river, This magical lake is endowed with an endless and captivating scenic beauty and vast tranquil environment and at the same time conceals a mystery lurking beneath its calm waters.

The enchanting lake, actually a series of 12 inter-connecting water bodies referred to as 'Laut'(sea) by the locals, is a generous treasure trove of nature heritage. The area is richly endowed with biological resources where 138 species of territorial flora and some 300 species of non aquatic vertebrates have been found. The water system is also home to a numerous aquatic vegetation and 144 species of freshwater fish.

The mysterious Tasik Chini is Malaysia's answer to Loch Ness. Legend has it that the lake was the site of an ancient Khmer city, now completely submerged and guarded by mystical monsters.

How to get there

Lake Chini is located in Chini Town at Pahang. By Road : Access to the lake is by road to Kampung Belimbing, about 100 kilometers, south west of Kuantan and then on by boat through the winding Chini river. Alternatively, one can go by road via Segamat Highway through the new town of Chini, and then continue traveling for 15 minutes through palm oil estate roads to the lake.

Why The Frogs No Longer Sing - A Case Study On The Survival Of A Freshwater

I was disturbed to read today that the frogs from the Tasek Chini were no longer singing. They have practically disappeared. This may not seemed strange to you, in fact, you may not have any idea where Tasek Chini is . After all, it "was" a beautiful large mass of freshwater lake in the tropical forests of Malaysia. It "was" because it now no longer is beautiful as it was, with pollution levels reportedly 56 times higher than is considered healthy, and worse, this is right inside the tropical jungle.

The frogs are not the only ones disappearing. The fishes, cobras, pythons are also diminishing in numbers. Weeds called the "Cat's Tail" have proliferated, snuffing out important sunlight that would allow organisms to grow.

This is worrying enough for some concrete action to be taken to revive the ecosystem. In retrospect, how can action be taken to protect the environment, or a delicate ecosystem such as Tasek Chini, or any other lake in the world?

Here at Tasek Chini I read about the Sustainable Development Network or SUSDEN which is running the Save Tasik Chini Campaign since August 2004, and these are remedial steps taken by the authorities and the Non Government organisations in concert to step the decline:

1. Collect and remove fallen trees and weeds that choke the lake
2. reduce the pollution that comes from newly developed training camps for National Service that have been built near the lake
3. reduce the industrial pollution from nearby oil palm estates that bring fertilisers and pesticides into the lake
4. stop illegal logging activities near the lake
5. disallow opening of land within the forest near the lake
6. introducing programs to empower the aborigines called Jakun living in the surrounding areas of the lakes so that they continue to live there with their traditional resources that are linked to biodiversity conservation.

Most important of all is education to children on the importance of the lake and introduce them to the lifestyle of the aborgines living off the land surrounding the lake. These aborigines lived in harmony with the animals, plants and environment and they ensure the survival of the lake.

Now if you do have a lake in your area where you are living, ensure that the frogs stll sing. Frogs are a good barometer of the environment. Frogs are declining due to habitat destruction, contamination, predation and genetic pollution. Will the frogs sing again at Tasek Cini? We do not know yet, but there is one thing we do know. Irregardless of where we are, if we save the frogs, we may be able to save our lives too.
